Product Description Learn how to design, make, repair, improve, and maintain sails If you want to produce sturdy sails for daysailing and cruising, built of low-tech materials you can repair with a few simple tools, The Sailmaker's Apprentice can show you how. Emphasizing the handwork that distinguishes the highest-quality, most durable sails, sail pro Emiliano Marino tells you how to select a rig, introduces you to sail shape and theory, and then shows you -- step by step, with the help of over 700 detailed illustrations -- how to sew patches, hand sew rings, fix tears or frayed edges, and stitch seams, not to mention how to make your own sails, canvas sailcovers, and sailbags from scratch. A visual feast for the sailor as well as an indispensable guide for the mariner comprehensive apprenticeship, this hands-on reference is an illustrated tour of the world's rig and sail types, contemporary and historical.

For your eyes only August 23, 2010 Wash This book is a rather well written, albeit long, how to book for sailors. It teaches the reader everything from proper sail design and finishing to how the sail really works. This book is one of two books that the do-it-yourself sailor should own. This book is an easy read an anyone with enough gumption would be able to successfully stitch together a long lasting sail.
That does not mean the the book is only for those who sail. I read this book because I wanted to know how sails were built, not because I had an interest in constructing a sail. Read it, you will so much the wiser for it.
Excellent Reference Book May 1, 2010 Louise Muse I am not a sailor nor have any inclinations to make sails. I have been involved in a project on 19th century sailmaking. This book was one of my most important sources to learn about the principals of sailmaking. The history can be found in archives etc. but how sails are actually put together can be found in this book. I highly recommend it for anyone studying historic sailing ships or sailmaking. Well written, clear explanations, and super diagrams make this a valuable book for anyone interested in maritine history.

Sailmaker's Bible February 7, 2010 A. Kennedy (Queensland, AU) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A classic of the modern 'how to' genre this text is in fact so much more than a manual on how to make a sail. The author provides an in depth history of sails, their evolution and their use in the modern era. The information contained in the text is detailed, well presented and therefor clearly understood, which ticks all of the boxes that encompass a great work of reference. If I were allowed only one text on the subject this would be the only book I would need to construct most sails with confidence.
