The forum software has been updated to the latest version tonight. Please let me know if you run into any irregularities!
Most of the features are the same, and the improvements are "behind the scenes" in the security features of the software. But, because I have a few modifications to the software, any upgrade can sometimes "break" a feature we have been using in the past.

Thanks, guys. It was an upgrade I was dreading because of the number of files to compare ... 86 files for the forums, and another 29 for the modification that allows us to upload pictures. I noticed that the display of the pictures is back to the default, with the larger frame around them, but I may keep it like that until the next major new version comes out. I'm looking at that now, or going to vBulletin (although it has a yearly fee that I'd rather avoid.)
After comparing the files for any changes I made, I then had to add back in a couple of mods that have to do with the registration process and administering the user file, and then copy over the editing that adapts the look and feel of the site. Boring stuff, but I'm glad it went so well (so far!)
There is a slight change to the registration rules, where I dumped the hacked "visual confirmation" where the new user had to read a deformed series of numbers to input. I could never read the things, but the spam 'bots were able to. That allowed the bots to register and put porn websites in their profile. I deleted them before they got to the point where they could post messages (or porn pics), but it was a hassle.
Now, what seems to work is that I have a registration code that is unique to messing-about that the prospective person reads and then has to put it into the registration box. Its a written out number like "forty five hundred and twenty six" and they have to put in "4526" in the box. Real live people can do it, but so far, the bots haven't been able to because each forum is using their own code and it isn't stored anywhere a bot can harvest it.
I know all this inside-baseball stuff is fascinating (NOT!).

Well, it may be background stuff that we don't understand, but the forum is working well due to your efforts. I for one really appreciate what you have done and are doing. T'was a little concerned last night when I saw the messages on the screen. But was sure you were on it.
A big THANK YOU! for all you do to keep this going.

I thought it was interesting Frank. Thanks for the info. My son told me with my router I didn't need a fire wall, Just spent the evening watching the glue dry on my Million Dollar Cradle and chasing small time adware. Seem some cleaners like SE Adware and Norton don't find everything even of they are up to date. What a pain.

Well, the router will protect you from someone invading your PC, but not from when you "invite them in" by downloading an email or opening a video file, etc. I use both Ad-Aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy; they each catch different things, it seems. Both are free (although Lavasoft is really pushing the commercial version of their product now, Ad-Aware Pro).

Frank, that was an eye-opener. I guess it never occurred to me that you must put part of your effort into "patrolling the borders" so that we can have a more care-free experience here. My thanks!

The one from Jordan Wood Boats that required me to buy more expensive tools for a single project than any other project I have ever done! (well, almost ... I did score a thickness planer, new plunge router and some miscellaneous stuff ... "its for the grandkid, for heaven's sake!" No one better tell my wife!)
