There is nothing - absolute nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing-about in boats

I've got a business trip booked in Olympia next week and arranged a couple of extra days of sightseeing before. I'll be spending this Sunday prowling Port Townsend and Monday Seattle. I'm hunting for interesting nautical destinations, dusty chandleries, 'local' nautical bookstores and any other place where I can look at wooden boats.

I'll be there way out of season, so I'm guessing some options won't be available.  I know that there's a marine foundry in Port Townsend, but I'm not sure if they take visitors/shoppers (which may be good given my weakness for bronze).  I'm supposed to look up a hardware store called Hardwicks and a marine salvage/recycling store called Dunato's Second Wave--both in Seattle.

Any other ideas?

There are a number of interesting marine related places to visit in Port Townsend.   Plan on seeing the Chandlry of the Wooden Boat Foundation.   Lots of books, gear and interesting items that you won't find other places.  Leave your checkbook in your car or plan on using your credit limit.   Edensaw Woods is a drool over spot always.  There are a lot of rigging/spar/builders and other related shops within a block of the Wood Boat Foundation in Port Townsend.   Lots of good restaurants within walking distance too.  Fort Warden is an interesting short drive from down town.  You will find the marinas in Port Townsend facinating places to walk the docks.  Most of the Marine related businesses will be closed on Sundays during the off season.  But the Wooden Boat Foundation will be open and they will refer you to many places that you may find interesing

Center for Wooden Boats on South End of Lake Union in Seattle is a place you will not want to miss.  You will find a large number of classic wooden boats as well as a huge cedar log being carved into a war canoe.  Also the Hiram Chittenden Locks are well worth the time to visit.   Both Hardwick's and Donato's Second Wave are fun.  Salmon Bay Fishermans Terminal in Ballard is always interesting in the off season since it is home part for so many Alaska fishing boats as well as other classic boats.

You can stop by the Devlin shop, it's about 15 minutes out of downtown Olympia. See the recent threads "another new build" and "new build part II" to see what we are doing.

Thanks Barry and Joel,

I've now got a few more stops to make in PT before I leave.  I've heard of Edensaw and will try to find it.  I heard from PT Foundry and they have a show room.  That could be very dangerous.  I pray that they don't accept credit cards.

Joel, I relied heavily on Sam's book during my 2005 project--my first boat build.  I'd very much like to see the shop and didn't realize that it's in Olympia.  I'll definately skip work to poke around there a little.  Thanks for the invitation.

Thanks everyone.  I'll post pictures on my return.

Just thinking.  If someone offers me an apprenticeship up there, should I give up the career I've been working on for 25 years?  Hmmmmm.  [drumming fingers]  Sure, why not.

John, e-mail me prior to your arrival.  If I am not working, I can drive you out to Devlin's shop.  Either way, e-mail me with some contact inofrmation and I will give you my number as well.  Obviously, I am in Olympia as well. Wink
