There is nothing -- absolute NOTHING -- half so much worth doing
as simply messing-about in boats.

The most free online information I've yet to find on these boats. I find them to be one of the finest looking boats. No they dont really floowww, in there lines. They are all about, get out of my way, I've got work to do.
Yea know, kinda like Foghorn Leghorn smacking the chicken hawk outta the way, "Go away boy, yer botherin me"

Marvelous site.  Always enjoy looking at the older working boats.  Much more interesting to me than the bleach bottles. Laughing

Related to this is a novel "Shadow in the Sands", a recent sequel to the old classic "Riddle of the Sands". "Shadow" is an account of a short trip on such a boat..."Gloria"......circa 1903. In this story, the boat was supporting cast....and was not depicted in a flattering way. Good story, nonetheless. Would love to see it made into a movie.

Great info about the smacks.  Regarding "Shadow on the Sands", wasn't Gloria a much shallower boat?  I read the book a few years ago when I was living in Britain, but have forgotten a lot of it.  It was interesting seeing some of the old gaffers when they came to Gloucester docks to have work done.  Anyway, thanks for the links, and for anyone who hasn't read the classic 1903 novel "The Riddle of the Sands" (the book that "Shadow" is based on) by Erskine Childers: do so.  It's not only one of the first espionage novels ever written, but the sailing is first rate and is the core of the plot.  If you get a copy, don't read the blurb on the back or anything, just read the story and let the discoveries happen.
